King of Pop Michael Jackson is gravely ill and needs a new lung to save his life, says a best-selling author who has penned a new biography of the singer.

Ian Halperin writes that the 50-year-old entertainer “suffers from Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, a potentially fatal genetic illness, as well as emphysema and gastrointestinal bleeding,” People magazine reports.

In an interview with Touch magazine, according to People, Halperin says that Jackson has “had it for years, but it’s gotten worse. He needs a lung transplant but may be too weak to go through with it … [But] it’s the [gastrointestinal] bleeding that is the most problematic part. It could kill him.”

Earlier this year, People reports, Jackson was photographed in a wheelchair, and “he was spotted receiving help walking, while wearing a Zorro-style mask.”

He is also 95-percent blind in his left eye and can barely speak, Halperin reportedly told Touch.
